Maitiu Mag Tighearnan hailed as hero as he used hurley stick on Somalian man in North Belfast

Maitie Mag Toghearnan has revealed himself as the person with the stick who took matters into his own hands to confront the attacker last night.

He single handedly tackled the knife wielding Sudanese attacker attempting to decapitate a man on the Belfast street before police arrived.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned it as an “appalling” attack and praised those who “intervened to remove the attacker” during an urgent debate in the Northern Ireland Assembly earlier

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly urged “everyone to remain calm to allow the police to carry out their investigation”

Traditional Unionist Voice’s Timothy Gaston said the attack “can’t be divorced from the immigration debate”, while the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP)’s Matthew O’Toole said “no ethnicity or race has a monopoly on violence”
