Police shoot, kill woman after reports of gunfire in Grants Pass

A Grants Pass woman was shot and killed by police Saturday afternoon after officers responded to reports of a person firing guns in the roadway, authorities said.

Police then fired their department-issued weapons, hitting the woman, officials said. She was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center, where she was identified as Alicia Shelton, 43, of Grants Pass. Shelton was pronounced dead at the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Officers were called about 12:30 p.m. to the area of Grants Pass Parkway and M Street after multiple 911 callers reported a woman standing in the roadway and firing handguns, according to the Grants Pass Police Department and Oregon State Police. Investigators said responding officers gave repeated verbal commands for the woman to drop the weapon, but those commands were ignored.

The Josephine County Major Crimes Team was activated, and Oregon State Police are leading the investigation into the shooting. The Oregon State Police Crime Lab responded to process the scene. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, which officials said is standard protocol following an officer-involved shooting.

Following the shooting, numerous social media posts from Shelton surfaced hinting at mental health struggles. The Josephine County District Attorney’s Office is expected to release further information as the investigation continues.
