Police declined to share the man’s name, but the man’s family spoke to 13 ON YOUR SIDE Thursday morning, identifying him as Da’quain Tre Johnson.
Johnson died from his injuries early Thursday morning. His family said he was a father with another baby on the way.
According to GRPD, the shooting happened after a GRPD officer called in a report of a person riding their bike and carrying a firearm on Eastern Avenue SE around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Winstrom said police had been chasing Johnson on his bike for at least 90 seconds. He didn’t stop, and the video shows Johnson attempting to run away.
Less than 24 hours after a Grand Rapids police officer fatally shot a man who authorities said was armed during a police chase, the department released video of the incident.
In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said he felt it was important to combat misinformation shared online about the shooting Wednesday night. It’s one of the reasons why the department decided to share three short clips of redacted body camera and in-car footage.
