ARREST OF TEACHER FOR NOT PHYSICALLY STOPPING A STUDENT FIGHT SPARKS CONTROVERSY: On the same day she was named Teacher of the Month, veteran educator Diamond G. Coleman was arrested.

A “top performer” at Roy Neal Shelling, Jr. Elementary, she now faces a charge of contributing to child delinquency after a student fight broke out in another teacher’s unsupervised classroom.

A viral video shows Coleman blocking the doorway to prevent a riot, reportedly saying, “Let them fight.” She blocked more students from joining while she waited for help that did not come.

While police interpreted this as incitement, supporters argue it was a tactical move to contain the violence and protect herself—as teachers lack the training and legal protection to safely break up violent brawls.

This case highlights every teacher’s nightmare: a “duty of care” vs. physical safety. Louisiana law states teachers aren’t required to intervene in batteries, yet Coleman now faces a career-ending legal battle.

Is she a criminal or a scapegoat for a failed policy? The case leaves three lingering questions:

—Why was that classroom unsupervised in the first place? No sub, no adult, and a veteran teacher from two doors down is the one who ends up in handcuffs for trying to contain a situation she didn’t start.”

–Why was she arrested if the school district thought her failure to act was not criminal and would be handled by the district?

–What specific training are teachers given to be cops, or what backup does the district provide if teachers are arrested for following policy? The video shows Coleman not interacting, opting to let the children fight it out while she waited for help that never came. She had no training to jump in, and without it, she would face considerable liabilities in the aftermath if she had put her hands on the students.
