Perdue Farms truck driver narrowly survived 2018 wreck before fatal Bay Bridge crash
Seven years before plunging off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to his death, Perdue Farms truck driver Ronnie Andrews survived a close call after crashing his truck.
Andrews, 61, of Robersonville, North Carolina, was killed around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb 15 when his rig crashed through guardrails on the southbound span near the North Channel Bridge and fell into the water below, authorities said. His body, truck and trailer were recovered that evening.
In a Facebook post from 2018, Andrews described cheating death in a close-call wreck, thanking God for his survival.
“Blessed to be here. A few scratches but thank God I’ alive!,” he wrote at the time, accompanied by an image of his wrecked truck.
The veteran driver, with 35 years in trucking including time at Perdue, spoke to his wife Lovie the night before without mentioning fatigue, she told WAVY. Perdue Farms called Andrews a valued team member, offering condolences. Andrews had spent five years driving for Perdue, according to Lovie.
No other vehicles were involved, and the cause remains under investigation.
