Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Steven Lewis Hooks, 54, and Bernice Shaneka Chenevert, 31, both of Detroit, in connection with the fatal stabbing of Cordell Harris, 40, also of Detroit.
On March 10, 2026, at approximately 11:54 p.m., at a liquor store in the 14800 block of Livernois Avenue in Detroit, it is alleged Mr. Harris spoke to Defendant Chenevert. After a brief exchange she started a verbal altercation with Mr. Smith. It is further alleged that Defendant Chenevert had contact with Defendant Hooks and gave him a broken glass bottle. Defendant Hooks then stabbed Mr. Harris multiple times in his neck. He was privately transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Steven Lewis Hooks and Bernice Shaneka Chenevert have both been charged with Premeditated First-Degree Murder. *
They were arraigned and remanded to jail on March 13, 2026, in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 23, 2026, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 30, 2026, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Shawn Jacque.
Information reads: “So this the woman who provoked the life of Cordell Harris being taken.. if you knew Cordell you already know he was only tryna holla at her.. she went outside told her Tender man and he came back inside wit a broken glass bottle to stab Cordell but it wasn’t working out for him once Cordell got to whoopin his ass.. this girl jumped in to help and her and the dude both got to stabbing Cordell.. her name is Bernice Khluud … all Cordell was tryna do was buy her a drink & holla at shorty. this the most random dumbest shit ever .. he didn’t deserve to loose his life …. Moral of the story fellas if she pretty and broke just mind yo business.”
