The parents of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes have been arrested in Carter County, Tennessee, following the heartbreaking discovery of their daughter’s body in South Carolina.
John Herb Hayes III and Geordyn Nichole Hayes were arrested Tuesday evening and each charged with unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the charges stem from the circumstances surrounding Saylor’s disappearance and subsequent death. They are expected to be extradited to Georgetown County, South Carolina.
Saylor disappeared from a rental home in the Pawleys Island area on August 30. After an extensive search involving law enforcement, first responders and community volunteers, her body was recovered from nearby waters the following morning.
Sheriff Carter Weaver emphasized that the arrests are based on evidence gathered during the investigation and do not establish guilt. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
