Richmond Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Thursday evening.
The shooting that involved an RPD officer happened at the Belt Atlantic Apartments in the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike just after 6:45 p.m. on May 7.
Chief Rick Edwards said when his officers arrived on scene, they heard gunshots and were directed by people to go upstairs.
“When the officers were climbing the stairwell they started hearing more gunshots, one of our police officers confronted an individual, an adult female, and discharged his firearm,” Edwards said.
The woman was reportedly shot and killed by an RPD officer on scene.
RPD says they did recover the gun allegedly fired by the woman.
No additional victims were found.
“We cleared the apartment and nobody else was inside there and we also haven’t had anyone else show up at local hospitals for gunshot wounds,” Edwards said.
Also on scene were chaplains with the Richmond Police Department, including Dr. Gwen Andrews, who said the woman who died was a mother of two.
“There are kids involved, there are friends involved and you see the emotions high,” Andrews said.
In accordance with department policy, the officer involved is now on paid administrative leave and will remain so as police investigate what happened.
Chief Edwards said body camera footage will be released in the following weeks for transparency.
