Outrage in Paradise: Wealthy Washington Man Pelts Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal With Rock, Brags He Can Pay Any Fine
A 37-year-old Washington logistics company owner named Igor Lytvynchuk decided to play tough guy on a Maui beach near Lahaina, hurling a rock at a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal lounging in shallow water. Bystanders caught the whole thing on video and confronted him as he casually walked away.
Instead of showing remorse, the man reportedly boasted about his money and claimed he could just pay whatever fine came his way. Hawaiian authorities detained him and have kicked the case over to federal NOAA investigators for potential violations of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
These seals are down to about 1,400 left in the world and have been fully protected since 1972. This is not some victimless stunt. It’s blatant disrespect for protected wildlife and the rule of law by someone who thinks his wallet puts him above accountability. Conservatives have long warned that elite entitlement breeds exactly this kind of arrogance. Time for real consequences, not a slap on the wrist. Maximum fines and jail time would send the right message.
