A body has been found in the search for missing Mississippi teen who went missing on July 4th.

Officials say a park ranger spotted the body around 8:40 to 8:45 a.m. on the northwest end of Horn Island, right near the western tip where Nolan Xavier Wells was last seen. The Jackson County Coroner’s Office is handling confirmation, and positive identification is still pending as of midday Monday.

Wells, a wide receiver who starred at Ocean Springs High School and was a rising sophomore playing college ball at Southwest Mississippi Community College, went out to the popular barrier island on Saturday, July 4, with friends. He was last spotted around 3 p.m.

His buddies headed back to the mainland later that evening thinking he might have caught another ride. His phone somehow made it back to his family, but Nolan never showed up at home. Friends and family spent the next day hoping he’d turn up, while search teams from multiple agencies got to work.

Sheriff John Ledbetter said they’ve stayed in touch with Nolan’s family throughout. His mom, Christine Wonsley, has been posting on social media asking anyone who took photos or videos on Horn Island Saturday to share them, in case they show her son.
